Description
On 17 Sep 2020 a massive hurricane in the Mediterranean devastated this lovely town. Part of he mountainside was washed down in a slurry and engulfed the town and harbour area with over 5 ft of rock and rubble. The access road is severely damaged cutting off the town.
The beautiful village of Assos is situated on a craggy hillside overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located just a few miles north of Myrtos Beach - made famous by the film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Myrtos is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - just Google it!
The village retains its simple original traditional Ionian architecture, thanks to the French who came to the aid of the people to rebuild their houses after the 1953 earthquakes. The square is dedicated to the French people and is known as Paris Square with a commemorative plaque dedicated to them.
