Description
Halong Bay weather can often be hazy, to say the least, due pollution emanating from the many inefficient factories up and down the coast. This was the case on the day I captured this image. There was little sea traffic, with just the occasional fishing boat navigating around the extraordinary karst landscape.
Situated off the coast of North Vietnam, east of the country's capital Hanoi, is the famed Hạ Long Bay. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular travel destination.
The name Hạ Long means "descending dragon". The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. Ha Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà Island to the southwest. These larger zones share a similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate, and cultural characters.
