Description

This lovely little 18th century St Maxime's chapel in Riez in the south of France was a great find. The town is charming and peaceful, so just relax, have a coffee or meal and just wander around. The church is situated up a small hill and it's only a gentle walk to get to it.

On this hill St Maxime was built for the second time. It had been destroyed in the 16th century at the time of the religious struggles by the people themselves. However, in 1655, it was repaired and rebuilt by the clergy and the people who erected the present chapel. A hermitage was then attached to it.

In 1975 it was still occupied by two hermits, a Capuchin and a Franciscan, when a community of three Clarisse sisters wished to settle there, on the proposal of the Bishop of Digne. After some reluctance, Brother Porphyre agreed to give way to them. Today, the Clarisse sisters are six in number, plus a novice. Their activity alternates between prayer, manual work, meditation and welcoming retreatants, in a simple life conducive to meeting the Divine.
