Description
Surfs boards in the sun in Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) harbour. The small town of Mousehole is a charming village and fishing port in Cornwall, United Kingdom.
Mousehole is about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Penzance on the shore of Mount's Bay and lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park. The population of the village is around 700 people (as of the 2011 census).
The origins of its modern name 'Mousehole' are unknown, although it is suggested that it was derived from the Cornish word Moeshayle, meaning “young woman's brook”, while others maintain it as simply being a reference to the original tiny harbour, or to a nearby sea cave, which resembled a mouse hole.
