Artist's Description

Comet Neowise is traveling at about 40 miles per second (that's about 144,000 mph, or 231,000 km/h). This image was captured on 20th July 2020 in County Tipperary, Ireland as the comet's visibility is beginning to wane. Clouds, seen as an orange colour, are creeping in from the left, so within another minute all visibility was gone.

The comet appeared fairly low in the north-western sky in the constellation of Ursa Major, below the asterism of the Big Dipper (The Plough). For observers in the northern hemisphere, it can also be seen in the morning, the comet appears very low above the north-eastern horizon, below Capella.

C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) or Comet NEOWISE is a long period comet with a near-parabolic orbit discovered on March 27, 2020, by astronomers during the NEOWISE mission of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope. At that time, it was an 18th-magnitude object, located 2 AU (300 million km; 190 million mi) away from the Sun and 1.7 AU (25...

About Rob Hemphill

Rob Hemphill

Having enjoyed photography for over 30 years, I got my first serious DSLR in 2009. I now capture images with a Nikon D850. Landscape, nature and travel photography excite me the most, but there's still room for macro photography. My favorite subject is waterfalls, especially in the fall. Capturing great photographs takes a lot of commitment, plenty of resources, a keen eye and most important a love of photography. My photographs are appropriate for home and business use, and suitable for advertising too. If you see something that you like, please Vote for, Favorite, leave a comment, or even Buy an image! To those of you who find something to purchase I would like to show my sincere gratitude and appreciation. Thank you so much! Also,...
