Description
A dying tree in one of the thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park. For the past 20 years satellite imagery has shown new hot spots appearing within the Park are on the increase and some of them very large, hot and corrosive.
These trees have little chance in surviving for more than a few years under these conditions. Many of the dead trees are due to variations in the level of the hot pools, the tree roots have been cooked. Also, some pools will produce gasses that kill trees. Many of the trees are white bark pines.
Global warming has contributed to the spread of the mountain pine beetle, which is feasting on and killing the pine trees. This makes life challenging for much of nature and it's a wonder that there is so much life within this hostile area.
