Description
On a helicopter tour from Page, Arizona to the top of Tower Butte, an incredible natural structure rising from the desert earth, we flew over some of Lake Powell's inlets. This is an interesting area which shows the dramatic sandstone inlet cliff edges and extraordinary geology.
Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, which straddles the border between Utah and Arizona in the United States. It is the second-largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the US after Lake Mead.
The lake is the largest coastal dune lake in Florida and North America covering almost 800 acres and surrounds the north and east side of Camp Helen State Park providing the park with an extraordinary natural resource. Lake Powell has also been honoured with an “Outstanding Florida Waters” designation.
Lake Powell has a channel, known as an outfall, that runs into the Gulf of Mexico. Depending on the tides and winds, salt water from the Gulf may enter the lake when the outfall is open. It is common to find different saltwater species alongside freshwater species in the lake. The mixture of these two waters (salt and fresh) create what is called brackish water.
