Description
The Giant Banyan Tree or Strangler Fig as it's often called throttles its host tree and attempts to crush walls and foundations of any structures in its way. Here at Angkor, the trees appear over many parts of the temples and walls which amazingly leaves them reasonably undamaged.
One factor that has enhanced the growth of the trees at Angkor Wat is the unique property of the stones that were used to building the temples. These temples are made of sandstone which is porous in nature which enables the roots to extract water from the stones.
This is one of the great wonders of the world!
